Remember Their Courage. Honor Their Sacrifice. Live with Purpose.
Purpose gave us freedom.
Recently, I had the extraordinary opportunity to ride through the beautiful countryside of Brittany and Normandy, France. I expected the journey to be memorable, the winding roads, rolling fields, charming villages, and breathtaking landscape but I did not anticipate how deeply the experience would affect me.
As we made our way through Normandy and visited the beaches where Allied soldiers landed during World War II, the word purpose began to take on an entirely different meaning. Standing in a place where so many young men courageously fought and where so many gave their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today was incredibly moving.
These soldiers were called upon to do something almost unimaginable. They moved forward despite fear. They demonstrated courage, determination, sacrifice, and an extraordinary commitment to something greater than themselves.
They had purpose.
And because of their PURPOSE, generations that followed were given freedom.
The Meaning Behind the Poppy
Throughout this part of the world, the poppy carries a powerful symbolism.
Its delicate red petals have become a symbol of remembrance a way of honoring those who sacrificed their lives in war and ensuring that their courage is never forgotten. There is something especially powerful about the contrast. A flower so delicate representing courage so extraordinary.
The poppy reminds us that even after tremendous loss, life can bloom again. It represents remembrance, resilience, hope, and the responsibility to carry forward what others fought to protect.
As I traveled through Normandy, I found myself looking at the poppies differently. They were not simply flowers growing along the countryside. They felt like quiet reminders.
Remember. Be grateful. Live fully.
Purpose at Its Finest
When I created my Purpose Collection, I designed the symbol to represent determination, to persevere, to endure, to triumph over life’s challenges, and ultimately, to live life to the fullest.
Over the years, Purpose has taken on different meanings for the women who wear it.
For some, it represents overcoming illness or loss. For others, it marks a new beginning, a personal goal, a graduation, a career change, motherhood, recovery, or simply the decision to believe in themselves again.
That has always been the beauty of Purpose for me. The design begins with my story, but once it is chosen and worn, the story becomes yours.
Yet standing on the beaches of Normandy gave me an entirely new perspective. Here was purpose demonstrated on a scale almost impossible to comprehend.
Young soldiers stepping forward despite tremendous uncertainty because they believed in something greater than themselves. Courage despite fear. Perseverance despite overwhelming odds. Sacrifice without knowing what the outcome would be.
This is Purpose at its finest.
Purpose Is Not the Absence of Fear
I think sometimes we imagine courageous people as somehow being fearless. But courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is choosing to move forward despite it.
That idea is something I have returned to many times throughout my own life and throughout the creation of Denise Cox Designs. Life does not always unfold as we imagine it will.
There are seasons of tremendous joy and seasons of unimaginable loss. There are moments when we feel certain of our direction and others when simply taking the next step requires courage. Purpose does not mean we always know exactly where we are going. Sometimes purpose simply means continuing.
Taking another step. Believing there can be something meaningful on the other side of difficulty. Choosing hope. Helping someone else. Living with intention. And recognizing that our lives can have an impact far beyond what we may ever see.
A Greater Purpose
Standing in Normandy also reminded me that purpose is not always about individual achievement. Some of the most meaningful things we do in life are done for someone else. For our families. For our communities. For people we may never meet. For generations that will come after us.
The soldiers who fought on those beaches could not have known the millions of lives their courage would ultimately touch.
They could not have known about the families that would grow, the dreams that would be pursued, the businesses that would be built, or the lives that would be freely lived because of the sacrifices made there.
Yet their purpose reached far beyond their own lifetimes. That thought stayed with me.Perhaps part of living with purpose is asking ourselves:
What am I doing today that may make life better for someone tomorrow?
Wearing a Reminder
Jewelry has always meant more to me than adornment. I believe what we wear can carry meaning. It can remind us of who we are, what we have survived, what we believe, and where we are going.
That is why I created the Purpose Collection. It is meant to be worn as a personal reminder of strength and determination. A reminder to persevere. A reminder to endure. A reminder to believe in what lies ahead. A reminder to live fully. And after my journey through Normandy, I would add one more:
A reminder to be grateful for the freedom we have been given and to use that freedom with purpose.
Remember Their Courage. Honor Their Sacrifice. Live with Purpose.
I returned home from France carrying more than photographs and memories. I returned with gratitude. Standing where history was made reminded me just how precious freedom is—and how much courage was required to protect it.
The poppies remind us to remember. The beaches remind us of sacrifice. And the stories of those who came before us challenge us to consider how we will use the life and freedom we have been given.
We may never be asked to demonstrate courage in the way those soldiers did. My grandfather, Harry Allan Digby was one of those soldiers who showed up with a PURPOSE. Although, he never spoke much about it, I’m humbled to honor him and the many others who stood up for what they believed in. I wished I would have thanked him, personally. It literally brings tears to my eyes to write this.
We will have all have moments when we are asked to choose courage over fear, perseverance over defeat, hope over despair, and purpose over simply standing still.
My hope is that the Purpose Collection can serve as a small, wearable reminder of that truth.
Remember their courage.
Honor their sacrifice.
Live with Purpose.
Because when we live with purpose, we honor not only our own story but those whose courage made our stories possible.
Once chosen, once worn, the story is yours.
This blog is written and dedicated to my “Pops and all of the other men who stood up with incredible courage.”
